Aleksei's 3rd Birthday

Yesterday was Alyosha's third birthday, and today was the party. There is nothing better than having a birthday party on a day other than your birthday. Because, naturally, you are celebrated all day that is actually your birthday and the party day too. Aleks woke up Friday morning, eyes still shut but brain already quickly working, saying 'airplane cake.' There was no way to explain to him that I was going to make him airplane cakes-3 in fact-but they were for him at his birthday party not the first hour he was awake on his actual birthday. Instead of trying to reason, we went to the kitchen and an hour later had a chocolate airplane cake with milk for breakfast. The rest of the day was pretty much what he wanted to do--hamburgers for lunch, playing outside, a few extra cartoons, and spagetti for dinner--all in all a good day.

Last night, Roma went to pick up the bike that Alyosha got for his birthday (Thank You Grandparents) After an hour of assembling, the rear wheel turned out to be crooked! It was already 11 and the store was closed to take the exchange so our plans of a surprise bike at the party changed. Rome and I decided to give him the bike in the morning and then the two big boys would go to get a new one and assemble it together before the party. In Alyosha fashion--with the bike sitting in the middle of the living room, he walked in and didn't even notice it. Instead he climbed on my lap and started talking about dinosaurs or airplane cakes. So, Roma asked him what he wants for his birthday present...he said a penguin and a car and we reminded him that he wanted a bicycle. Then Roma did hocus pocus with his fingers and "Wham" a bike appeared in middle of the living room. All day long Alyosha called it his bike Papa made with magic. (then they took it to the store to exchange and rebuild it...I guess the magic was a little too powerful)

Today was the party-the celebration with friends where he was the main attraction. Aleks was so excited that he was just sparkeling with a smile on his face the entire 3 hours. Before getting out of the car at the park, Al asked if we could leave the cakes in the car and eat them tomorrow. It usually isn't like him to put off cake, but he knew his friends were coming and the cakes looked pretty tasty--surely they would want some. He decided it would be a good idea to share with his friends and then they all could be happy for his birthday. We played games and the kids rode their bikes together and we had hotdogs and the grand finale- 3 airplane cakes. It was a little hectic--to get Alyosha's and the other kids attention for the cake and candles, the 'big people' sang Happy Birthday really loud and all the kids came running. Alyosha, with his little Speedy Gonzales legs ran up to the candles and blew them out. (see the video, click here)

Oh, by the way, Thank You Mama and Daddy (I'm sure more Mama than Daddy, but there surely was some Daddy contribution) for the swimming parties and birthday cakes--it all just happens when you are a kid, who knew it wasn't all magic?

Birthday Parties are a lot of work! And the guest list can be quite intemidating when you invite 6 kids (plus 12 parents, plus younger siblings....) but it is totally worth it.
